Tanzania Zanzibar: Nungwi, Pwani Mchangani, Stone Town 2010

ZANZIBAR BREAK

Well, it seems that Zanzibar is our yearly break destintaion with sun, sea and sand. The last couple of years we have been every single year, and it was always a success. This time we even stayed for 2,5 weeks!! Agreed, it was a bit long, but under the circumstances it was just right.

First we stayed on the northern point of the island, at Nunwi just next to the light house. And we would share our first days with good friends Bas and Nathalie and their daughter Natasha which was absolutely great! They also brought Ellen and Michiel with from The Netherlands, and we all got along fine. The daughters spent their time swimming, playing princess and all other things they do at that age, while the gentlemen (and the ladies as well by the way) were watching TV in the bar with an ice cold beer…because the world cup football was on!

I am pretty sure all other guests were having fun when Ellen stood up during the Dutch anthem and sang very loud and serious, or when Michiel was shouting that the Dutch players should kill their opponents. Marieke was especially interested if the Dutch prince and princess was present and Nathalie did watch once in a while while reading a book. All in all, it felt very harmonious.

Fortunately it wasn’t only about TV, because that is not the reason to go to Zanzibar for. When it was low tide we went out looking for star fish and sea urchins together with the girls, and especially Bas found them everywhere – probably he is still feeling them by now. We even found nudi branches, very beautiful.

Unfortunately after a few days everybody went different ways, and we headed for Pwani Mchangani. The luxurious Next Paradise was not really our thing, quite boring actually. We saw Holland defeating Uruguay but we almost didn’t dare shouting out loud because it was already very quiet. Anyway, all other guests went to bed anyway after the first half…

We enjoyed walking along the beach though and collecting shells, of playing Ariel and King Triton in the pool (yes yes, I was Triton, don’t worry). Once Rick played football on the beach with the local kids but hoopla, one of my vertebrae got dislocated. Getting older, daddy!

Our last days we spent at Bububu, only 10 minutes from our beloved Stonetown, where we saw Ellen and Michiel briefly before they left for the aiport. One day shopping in Stonetown and an evening watching the finals of the world cup in a very busy expat café were our most important events. The shopping was great and the finals had nothing to do with football but karate. We also paid a visit to Prison Island where Kiora loved the giant  Seychelles Tortoises, second in size after the Galapagos Tortoises.

The end was near and although we loved our time on Zanzibar again, next holiday is going to be a bit more action, otherwise these travel reports will get boring very soon. New plans are being made for November!
